Title: Escape of HMS BELVIDERA, 1812
Caption: On 23 June 1812 the British frigate HMS BELVIDERA, 36 guns, Captain Richard Byron, one of the half dozen such vessels off the American coast at the beginning of the War of 1812 encountered a United States squadron of five ships under Commodore John Rodgers in the USS PRESIDENT, 44 guns, which gave chase. The PRESIDENT gained on the British vessel until the former's main deck gun burst inflicting several casualties. Taking full advantage of this, Captain Byron made good his escape and reached Halifax on the 27th, having shown himself to be a skillful seaman and resolute commander.
