Caption: Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Faucon left New York 30 January 1863 in the chartered steamer ERICSSON with four rafts in tow for Rear Admiral DuPont at Port Royal, South Carolina. During squalls one of the rafts was lost the first night out. The sea, continuing to run high, he put into fortress Monroe to take in coal and refasten the remaining rafts. He left anchorage on the 10th and on the 12th, the second and third rafts broke loose about 40 miles off Cape Hatteras and were lost. Lieutenant Faucon arrived at Port Royal on 17 February with the remaining raft. Admiral DuPont exonerated him of all blame for the loss of the three rafts.
