USN 903305 Attack on Sackets Harbor, 19 July 1812

Attack on Sackets Harbor, 19 July 1812
Title: Attack on Sackets Harbor, 19 July 1812
Caption: On 19 July 1812, a British squadron, the 22-gun ship HMS ROYAL GEORGE, Commodore Earl, the HMS PRINCE REGENT, 16 guns, and HMS EARL OF MOIRA, 14 guns, with 3 small vessels, sailed up to attack Sackets Harbor and capture USS ONEIDA, a 16-gun brig, Lieutenant Melandhon Woolsey. A long 32-pounder in the fort, fired by Captain William Vaughan, raked the ROYAL GEORGE wearing round to fire a broadside, which sent splinters as high as her mizzen topsail yard, killed fourteen men, and wounded eighteen. The PRINCE REGENT and EARL OF MOIRA were also severely struck. Commodore Earl hauled off while a Yankee band played "Yankee Doodle" and the first Battle of Sackets Harbor was ended. Nothing on shore had been injured or damaged in the least.
