Description: Photo #: S-584-103 Preliminary Design Plan for an Ammunition Ship for the Fiscal Year 1917 Shipbuilding Program... August 2, 1916 A preliminary design for an ammunition ship sent to the Secretary of the Navy for consideration in meeting the General Boards characteristics of 7 October 1915 for ammunition ships. The design adopted the general form of Henderson (Transport # 1, see Photo # S-584-077) but modified it by moving machinery aft to facilitate cargo storage, cooling, and handling. This design, with a few modifications, was used as the basis for construction of Pyro (Ammunition Ship # 1) and Nitro (Ammunition Ship # 2). This plan provides four 5-inch guns, turbine machinery for a speed of 16 knots, and an ammunition cargo capacity of 3,200 tons in a ship 460 feet long on the waterline, about 61 feet 1 inches in beam, and with a normal displacement of 10,600 tons.
