Description: Photo #: S-584-115 Proposed 5750 ton Scout ... January 19, 1917 Preliminary design (Scheme IV) prepared by the Bureau of Construction & Repair during consideration of plans for cruisers to be included in the Fiscal Year 1918 program. The Bureau took the initiative to study four such designs, seeking to reduce size below that of the 1917 cruiser (Preliminary Design No.160, see Photo # S-584-093). Scheme IV differed from Scheme II (see Photo # S-584-113) in abandoning one strength deck to save weight but the resulting design was considered unsatisfactory. The P.D. 160 design was used for the Fiscal Year 1918 and 1919 cruisers rather than shifting to a smaller ship. This plan provides for a ship carrying two 8-inch and four 5-inch guns, turbine machinery and a speed of 32.8 knots in a ship 500 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 45 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 5,750 tons.
