Title: Preliminary Design Plan for a Battleship ... March 4, 1919 Note:
Description: Photo #: S-584-147 Preliminary Design Plan for a Battleship ... March 4, 1919 A preliminary design plan for a new battleship under consideration for construction with Fiscal Year 1920 funding. This drawing shows a ship that resembles the preceding South Dakota (Battleship # 49) class in overall layout and armament but that has been lengthened and enlarged to achieve higher speed. This plan differs from one prepared in February 1919 for a 1920 battleship (see Photo # 584-146) in adding heavy (10-inch) side armor at the Second Deck level, offset in part by provision of lighter armor on the waterline belt, turrets, and barbettes. No ships were built to these designs. This plan provides twelve 16-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 25 knots in a ship 750 feet long on the waterline, 106 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 48,750 tons. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
