Clarence Andrew Barninger Jr. was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps June 3, 1937, after graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He was promoted to first lieutenant June 3, 1940, and was selected for promotion to captain and major while a prisoner of war after the fall of Wake Island. He would have been promoted to major on August 11, 1942, ranking from August 7, 1942. He was in the Wake Detachment of the First Marine Defense Battalion and fought with that detachment until the surrender. He was liberated September 13.

He was later promoted to the rank of Colonel.

He died in Evanston, Illinois on June 19, 1999.
