Source Note: C, DNA, AFNRC, M625, roll 129. With the initial deployment of naval vessels there was an immediate need for colliers. A number of orders of this nature were sent to some navy yards. RAdm. Arent S. Crowninshield, for instance, telegraphed the commandant (Commo. Silas Casey) of League Island, PA on the same above-referenced date with the following words: “When will colliers be ready. Most urgently needed by Sampson.” Ibid.
