Description: Drawing prepared by the Bureau of Ships for a camouflage scheme intended for aircraft carriers of the CV-9 (Essex) class. This plan, dated 19 July 1943, shows the ship's starboard and port sides, bow, stern and island ends. USS Intrepid (CV-11), USS Hancock (CV-19) and the port side of USS Franklin (CV-13) were painted in this design, using Measure 32 colors (Dull Black, Ocean Gray and Light Gray). Design 3A was applied to USS Hornet (CV-12) using the lighter Measure 33 colors (Navy Blue, Haze Gray and Pale Gray). Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
