Description: On board USS Augusta (CA-31), circa May or early June 1944. The original photo caption, released on 8 June 1944, states that RAdm. Kirk was watching the invasion of Normandy. However, the presence of a nearby wooded shore makes this very unlikely. The photo was probably taken in an English port shortly the invasion began. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
