NH 110754-2 French 1500-tonne type destroyer

Photo #: NH 110754-2 French 1500-tonne type destroyer
Title: French 1500-tonne type destroyer
Description: (Identification code T31) At sea during World War II. Photo was dated 1943 by ONI, which also identified the ship as Tornade. This identification seems very unlikely, as Tornade was sunk off Oran on 8 November 1942 by British warships. Note the many alterations to this ship, among them 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft machine guns added on the forecastle (by the bridge front) and on the main deck (alongside the mainmast), removal of the after 130mm gun and fitting of davits and paravanes in an installation similar to the British Two Speed Destroyer Sweep (TSDS). This destroyer also has many oil drum like objects on her after deck. Photos that appear to have been taken at the same time and by the same camera show two similar destroyers (T32 and T33) and the battleship Lorraine. They may have been taken after these ships joined the Allies. The original print was received from the Office of Naval Intelligence. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
