Title: "Word at Sea" Plaster Model. Presented by Washington National Cathedral to Navy Memorial Museum
Caption: "Word at Sea" Plaster Model. Presented by Washington National Cathedral to Navy Memorial Museum, Washington Navy Yard, on April 21, 1967. Used as the model for a stone carving by Constantine Seferlis in the ceiling of the Northwest Cloister of the Cathedral. Mr. Seferlis is seen explaining the model's symbolism to Museum Director Captain Roy C. Smith III. At right is John G. Fanfani, Assistant Clerk of the works at the Cathedral. The carving depicts two Sailors and a Marine at Divine Services, a Navy Chaplain preaching, a gun turret with crow's nest above, and an anchor, which is not only a Navy symbol but also an old Christian symbol for steadfastness and faith.
