Photo #: NH 64724-KN Insignia of USS Lewis and Clark
Title: Insignia of USS Lewis and Clark
Description: Insignia of USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644) Artwork of the emblem adopted in 1965, as the ship was approaching completion. Its main symbol is a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) launching a Polaris missile. Above this appears a modified version of the reverse of the gold medallion presented to Indian tribes by Lewis and Clark during their explorations. The crossed peace pipe and tomahawk symbolize the desire for peace, yet a readiness to fight for freedom. The ship's motto Theirs to discover. Ours to defend has been substituted for the original medallion's inscription. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
