Caption: This insignia was received by the Naval History Division in 1957. The blue outer circle of the design, the word HERMITAGE, and its gold background, are the traditional "Blue and Gold" of the Navy. The winged horse symbolizes the ship's aviation capability through the use of helicopters. The battle ax on a red field represents the ship's battle capability. The green field with its yellow alligator indicates the amphibious role of the ship. The anchor on the blue field signifies that the HERMITAGE is a U.S. Navy Ship capable of navigating the seven seas.
