Caption: Protected cruiser built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Steel, 4600 tons, displacement by Wm. Cramp and Sons for U. S. Navy. Flagship, first of North Atlantic Squadron, then of Pacific Fleet. Decommissioned in 1902, housed over and served 1904 to 1926 as receiving ship at Puget Sound Navy Yard, except for the decade 1916 to 1926, when she was a prison ship. Sold in 1927.
