Title: USS YANKEE (1898, ex El Norte)
Caption: Built at Newport News, Virginia, 1892. Iron, 4659 tons, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. For the Southern Pacific Co. (Morgan Line) route between New York and New Orleans. Sold to U. S. Navy in 1898, converted to auxiliary cruiser for use in Spanish-American War, and later used as transport and training ship. In 1908 grounded on spindle rock, near Massachusetts. Refloated, she sank in Buzzards Bay while being towed into New Bedford. Pen and ink drawing by Samuel Ward Stanton.
