Caption: Portrait photo. Captain O'Brien was commissioned upon graduation from the Naval Academy with the class of 1942. He saw action in World War II throughout the western Pacific aboard USS SAN DIEGO (CL-53) and USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55). He became a naval aviator in 1947 and served, in 1952, as Executive Officer and later the Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 34, until 1955. He also served as Commander of Air Group 21 aboard USS LEXINGTON (CVS-16) and Operation Officer for the Commander of Carrier Division 3. In 1965 he assumed command of the refrigerator ship PICTOR (AF-54). On 29 May 1967 he assumed command of USS PRINCETON (LPH-5).
