Caption: Portrait photo. Vice Admiral Roeder entered the Naval Academy in 1927 and was commissioned on 4 June 1931. From August 1931 to June 1937 he had sea duty aboard USS RICHMOND (CL-9), USS GILMER (APD-11), USS FARRAGUT (DD-348), and USS LEXINGTON (CV-16). After various shore billets he served as Executive Officer of USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) from September 1945 to February 1947. From February to December 1947 he served as Commanding Officer of USS LOWRY (DD-770) and USS COLLETT (DD-730). Since 1947 he held various command positions. From 1955 to January 1956 he commanded USS PICKAWAY (APA-222). Since 1956 he served as Commander Amphibious Squadron One, Assistant Director for Naval Security Group Matters, and on 29 July 1966 he became Commander First Fleet.
