NH 70630 USS SOUTH DAKOTA (armored cruiser #9, later renamed HURON)

USS SOUTH DAKOTA (armored cruiser #9, later renamed HURON)
Title: USS SOUTH DAKOTA (armored cruiser #9, later renamed HURON)
Caption: Moored outboard of USS OREGON (battleship #3) at Mare Island, circa 1912. Both ships have received cage masts, and are in gray instead of the white-and-buff of the 1890's and early 1900's. A pair of 3-inch 50-caliber anti-torpedo-boat guns can be seen on the top of OREGON's after 13-inch turret. Designed for speed and endurance on the high seas. SOUTH DAKOTA's slim appearance is in sharp contrast to the beamy OREGON's monitor like lines.
