NH 70631 USS OREGON (battleship #3)

USS OREGON (battleship #3)
Title: USS OREGON (battleship #3)
Caption: Moored alongside pier at Mare Island, circa 1912. Also seen is USS SOUTH DAKOTA (later renamed HURON) (armored cruiser #9) outboard. Just forward of OREGON is USS FARRAGUT (torpedo boat #11) with an awning spread to shade her deck. Both OREGON and SOUTH DAKOTA have been fitted with cage masts and radio aerials; all three ships are in the gray "warpaint" adopted in 1908. SOUTH DAKOTA's relatively slender hull and high freeboard contrast with OREGON's beamy, monitor-like appearance; her forward turret, with two 8-inch guns, is dwarfed by OREGON's massive "pillbox" with two 13-inchers.
