Title: Early Naval Science
Caption: COASTING VESSEL of the Moluccas which had a sort of cabin on the regular Malay frame, while the forward part of the vessel was protected from the rays of the sun by a tent-like awning. The only mast stands near the stern. MACAO VESSEL constructed along European lines but the sides were very low, with the roof supported by the side planks, and made use of only when the sailors wished to guard themselves against the weather. JAVA COASTER shows the difference between these vessels and the German arrangement of the masts. COASTING VESSEL of Amboyna, Moluccas Archivelago combined the nautical construction of the Malay vessels with an arrangement of masts and rigging very similar to the European. A sort of platform was erected above deck, forming a second deck under which the crew and cargo found a good shelter.
