Title: Early Naval Science
Caption: CHINESE COASTER - Sharp at the bow, rounded at the stern, furnished with a deck and cabin. COASTER OF THE PHILLIPINE ISLANDS, with a broader or less projecting platform, in order to guard against upsetting. All these coasters are sailing vessels, usually with two masts. each made of only one piece. The sails are square and very clumsy. COASER OF THE PHILLIPINE ISLANS, usually very narrow vessels with balancing frames. All were sailing vessels; the sails being square and very clumsy. COASTER OF CELEBES in which less account is made of the rowers, as they have two masts. In the Straits of Malacca, a community was kept up with Sumatra by a coasting vessel built on a narrow keel and bottom, projection off almost square at the stem and stern. They were covered, like a tent, with matting, and were usually propelled by oars, though they had a main-mast for a sail, and a mizenmast of nearly equal height.
