Caption: Painted in Chinese waters circa 1861. Lieutenant Edwin John Pollard, RN, who probably commissioned this painting, commanded the ship from 5 December 1860 to 30 October 1861. COROMANDEL, formerly the merchant ship TARTAR, was bought in 1855 and served as tender to the flagship of the East India and China station, which in 1861 was the frigate CHESAPEAKE. Sold in 1866, she became the Japanese merchantman NARUTO and was scrapped in 1876.
