USN 900526 U.S. Marine Plaque

U.S. Marine Plaque
Title: U.S. Marine Plaque
Caption: Cannon atop a stand on which the Marine plaque is affixed. The cannon was captured during the Spanish-American War on McCalla Hill, only a few feet away from the site. The muzzle-loading cannon has an interior diameter of six inches at the muzzle and "Luis Bourbon May 23, 1742" is stamped on the gun. The plaque commemorates a battalion of U.S. Marines under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Huntington who, on 10 June 1898, came ashore near the plaque's location and became the first members of the United States Armed Forces to land on Cuban soil. It also honors those American service members killed in action at that time: Acting Assistant Surgeon John Blair Gibbs, U.S. Navy; Acting Sergeant Major Henry Good, U.S. Marine Corps; Sergeant Charles H. Smith, U.S. Marine Corps; Private William Dumphy, U.S. Marine Corps; Private James McColgan, U.S. Marine Corps; Private Goode Taurman, U.S. Marine Corps.
