Caption: Commemorating a battalion of U.S. Marines under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Huntington who, on 10 June 1898, came ashore near the plaque's location and became the first members of the United States Armed Forces to land on Cuban soil. It also honors those American service members killed in action at that time: Acting Assistant Surgeon John Blair Gibbs, U.S. Navy; Acting Sergeant Major Henry Good, U.S. Marine Corps; Sergeant Charles H. Smith, U.S. Marine Corps; Private William Dumphy, U.S. Marine Corps; Private James McColgan, U.S. Marine Corps; Private Goode Taurman, U.S. Marine Corps.
