Commodore Chauncey's Fleet Attacking Kingston Harbor, November 1812
Title: Commodore Chauncey's Fleet Attacking Kingston Harbor, November 1812
Caption: On 8 November 1812, Commodore Isaac Chauncey with USS ONEIDA and six armed schooners, got underway from Sackets Harbor and then there was a fight over at Kingston. Finding the HMS ROYAL GEORGE of 22 guns out at the False Duck Islands, the Commodore chased her into Kingston Harbor and then, at 3 o'clock he decided to run in and see what sort of defense the fort had. Two of his schooners were chasing merchantmen but the remaining four each carrying a long 32-pounder, went in ahead of ONEIDA, and kept up brisk fire on the batteries while the ONEIDA of 16 guns, short 24-pounders, ranged beside the ROYAL GEORGE. In 20 minutes the British cut their rope cables and ran their ship ashore, where a big body of troops could defend her. Then finding the shore batteries too heavy and the wind rising against his course out of the harbor, Chauncey retreated. The ROYAL GEORGE had been well beaten and the schooner SIMEO sunk. Thereafter, 4 schooners sufficed to blockade the fort of Kingston until the ice relieved them of the task.
