Sloops USS GROWLER and USS EAGLE in Action on Lake Champlain Against Shore Batteries, June 1813
Title: Sloops USS GROWLER and USS EAGLE in Action on Lake Champlain Against Shore Batteries, June 1813
Caption: On 3 June 1813, Lieutenant Macdonough in command of the American naval forces on Lake Champlain sent two small sloops, USS GROWLER and USS EAGLE, under Lieutenant Smith to the north end of the lake after three British gun boats, who had fled to the Sorel River, an outlet of the lake. Smith bravely but foolishly followed them and was trapped. A strong British land force came to help and pelted the American decks with musketry. The gunboats, armed with long 24-pounders, kept out of range of the sloops' carronades and, knocking out an underwater plank from EAGLE, she sank instantly. GROWLER had her main boom and forestay shot away and grounded. This gave the British, for the time, mastery of Lake Champlain. The Americans had one man killed and nineteen wounded who, with 92 unhurt men, fell into British hands.
