Caption: On 10 September 1813, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, with a squadron consisting of brigs USS LAWRENCE and USS NIAGARA with 18 and 32-pounder carronades and 2 long 12-pounders, USS CALEDOMA, the schooners USS ARIEL, USS SCORPION, USS SOMERS, USS PORCUPINE and USS TIGRESS, and the sloop USS TRIPPE at anchor in Put-in-Bay, Lake Erie, on sighting a British squadron under Commodore Robert Heriot Barclay, consisting of schooner HMS CHIPPEWA, ships HMS DETROIT (flag) and HMS QUEEN CHARLOTTE, brig HMS HUNTER, schooner HMS LADY PREVOST, and sloop HMS LITTLE BELT, Commodore Perry got underway and at 11:45 the action began. DETROIT became closely engaged with LAWRENCE and, in two hours, compelled her to surrender. Commodore Perry shifted his flag to NIAGARA and, accompanied by some of his schooners, took a raking position athwart the bows of the disabled DETROIT who soon after struck. HUNTER and LADY PREVOST surrendered about the same time as did CHIPPEWA and TRIPPE as soon as the American vessels overtook them, LAWRENCE rehoisted her colors.
