Operations on Lake Ontario, 28 September 1813
Title: Operations on Lake Ontario, 28 September 1813
Caption: On 18 September 1813, the Americans made the attack and came down handsomely on the enemy who received them warmly. The three landing American vessels were the new ship USS PIKE, the USS TOMPKINS, and the USS ASP, who fired away bravely, the PIKE taking the HMS WOLFE, Admiral Yeo's flagship as her special target. The TOMPKINS lost her foremast but PIKE shot away the main topmast and main yard of the WOLFE and killed so many men that Sir James squared away and made all sail from the three Yankee ships. The Americans lost five killed and wounded. The British did not publish the report of their losses.
