Title: Proposed 6500 ton Scout ... January 17, 1917 Note:
Description: Photo #: S-584-112 Proposed 6500 ton Scout ... January 17, 1917 Preliminary design (Scheme III) prepared by the Bureau of Construction & Repair during consideration of plans for cruisers to be included in the Fiscal Year 1918 program. The Bureau took the initiative to study four such designs, seeking to reduce size below that of the 1917 cruiser (Preliminary Design No.160, see Photo # S-584-093). Compared to P.D. 160, Scheme III employed two decks for structural strength, not one, and had a forecastle rather than being flush decked. The P.D. 160 design was used in the Fiscal Year 1918 and 1919 cruisers rather than shifting to a smaller ship. This plan provides for a ship carrying eight 6-inch guns, turbine machinery and a speed of 34.2 knots in a ship 520 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 46 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 6,500 tons. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
