Description: Photo #: S-584-113 Proposed 6500 ton Scout ... January 18, 1917 Preliminary design (Scheme II) prepared by the Bureau of Construction & Repair during consideration of plans for cruisers to be included in the Fiscal Year 1918 program. The Bureau took the initiative to study four such designs, seeking to reduce size below that of the 1917 cruiser (Preliminary Design No.160, see Photo # S-584-093). Scheme II reduced the number of boilers from twelve in P.D. 160 to eight but retained a similar overall general arrangement to P.D. 160. The P.D. 160 design was used in the Fiscal Year 1918 and 1919 cruisers rather than shifting to a smaller ship. This plan provides for a ship carrying eight 6-inch guns, turbine machinery and a speed of 32.4 knots in a ship 520 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 48 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 6,500 tons.
