December 30, 1917 A preliminary design plan for a submarine chaser intended to be more seaworthy than the Submarine Chaser # 1 class design in production at the time. The key change was the addition of a depth charge projector (backfitted later in the S. C. # 1 class) and six 500-pound depth charges. Initial study was focused on two alternative schemes, one (seen here) that provided for the added payload with as little change as possible from the existing design and a second that changed the propulsion plant from three engines to four and altered the location of the fuel tanks. Neither new design scheme was pursued. This plan provides one 6-pounder gun, gasoline engine machinery, and a speed of 32.6 knots in a ship 118 feet long on the waterline, 14 feet 3 inches in beam, and with a normal displacement of 83 tons.
