Title: Undated Draft Preliminary Design Plan for a 123-foot Submarine Chaser Note:
Description: Photo #: S-584-125 Undated Draft Preliminary Design Plan for a 123-foot Submarine Chaser An undated rough draft for a preliminary design plan for a submarine chaser. This sketch appears to represent an initial layout for what became Preliminary Design No.188 (see Photo # S-584-124), a 118-foot design that was intended to be more seaworthy than the 105-foot (water line length) Submarine Chaser # 1 class design in production at the time. The key change was the addition of a depth charge projector and six 500-lb. depth charges, which added almost seven tons additional payload. (Some S. C. # 1 class ships later received a depth charge projector in place of their original 3-inch gun aft.) The design seen here retained the basic layout of the existing design, including placing some fuel tanks below officers’ living quarters amidships. The original document was pencil on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
