May 18, 1918 Preliminary design drawing showing the layout of side and deck armor protection adopted in British Navy designer Stanley Goodall's two design plans (see Photos # S-584-136 and S-584-137) for a proposed new U.S. Navy fast battleship which Goodall called, as shown here, a battleship cruiser. Goodall's designs employed inclined side armor and a different arrangement of decks, consistent with contemporary British design practices. U.S. designs employed vertical side armor. This ship type was intended to combine battleship and battle cruiser qualities, but no ship of this type was built. Goodall was assigned to work in the U.S. Navy's ship design office in an exchange billet during World War I. The U.S. Navy's Lewis McBride served in the corresponding British ship design office.
