Description: Photo #: S-584-139 2150-2200 Ton Destroyer Leader ... June 10, 1918 Drawings showing hull form and internal structure for a large destroyer leader under consideration in mid-1918. This concept called for carrying fuel oil in an inner bottom tank (shown here as 4.5-feet deep amidships) and also in overhead wing tanks under the main deck in the machinery space (a triangular form shown in the centermost of these three drawings). This arrangement was adopted to reduce the tendency for the hull to hog as the center of the ship crested a wave. Further design development led to abandonment of an inner bottom tank on 23 September 1918. Design work on this concept ceased altogether shortly after the end of World War I. This plan displays cross-section views at three locations: the forward end of the forward boiler room, amidships, and the after end of the after boiler room.
