Description: Photo #: S-584-141 2150-2200 Ton Destroyer Leader ... June 10, 1918 Outline inboard profile drawing of a preliminary design for a large destroyer leader that was under consideration during mid-1918. This design was the most ambitious of the set under consideration, providing for a 360-ft. long ship capable of 37 knots maximum speed. This drawing shows a concept with the boilers separated, which was believed to allow some additional exploitation of topside deck area. While the ship designers were uncomfortable with the structural stresses in the hull amidships that this layout created, the Navy's Bureau of Steam Engineering considered the approach acceptable and supported further consideration of the design in a meeting held on 14 June 1918. The design was not adopted for construction. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book.
