Description: Photo #: S-584-144 Untitled and Undated Preliminary Design Drawing of a Destroyer Leader Untitled and undated outboard profile drawing of a design for a 325-ft. long destroyer leader, developed by the Navy’s Preliminary Design Branch to illustrate the implementation of a proposal made by the Bath Iron Works in January 1918 for a new enlarged destroyer for the U.S. Navy. Draft characteristics for this design included in Preliminary Design Book No.192 at the U.S. National Archives are dated 19 April 1918, suggesting that this drawing was made soon thereafter. A later series of preliminary designs (see Photo #s S-584-139 through -143) investigated a range of possibilities for ships of this general type. A contract with Bath Iron Works for design support was signed on 29 May but official interest in it was lost when the Navy settled on a larger, 2,200-ton design soon afterwards. None of these designs were adopted for construction. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book.
