George Cranfield Berkeley: son of the fourth Earl Berkeley entered the Royal Navy, 1766. Lieutenant, 1772. Captain, circa 1779. Rear Admiral, 1799. Vice Admiral, 1805. Admiral, 1810. Spent most of his career in European waters. However, he was CO of H.M. Sloop FAIRY off America in 1780, when he captured several American privateers. Vice Admiral Berkeley was the officer under whose orders the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair occurred in 1807.
