WWII Killed in Action List "N"

  S1c Arthur Nappen was killed in action on Stirling Island when a pontoon barge he was working on was hit by enemy bombing on 12 January 1944. Nappen was deployed with the 87th Naval Construction Battalion. On October 27, 1943, Company A and 25 men of the headquarters company of the 87th Naval Construction Battalion landed on Stirling Island with the 8th New Zealand Brigade. Operations were carried out under enemy high-level bombing, mortar and machine-gun fire; however, the assault troops soon eliminated enemy resistance. On 12 November 1943, the 87th Naval Construction Battalion began construction to rebuild the airfield on the Stirling Island. The airfield was essential to bombing campaign of Bougainville and nearby Japanese island bases. On 12 January 1944, a Japanese attack hit a barge where S1c Nappen and three Seabees were working. He was 21 years old. S1c Arthur Nappen was interned in the cemetery at Filami Village, Mono Island and later reburied at Hoff Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lankin, North Dakota and has a memorial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
GM3c Joseph Nesgoda was killed in action at Banika, Solomons, 24 Dec 1944 while serving with the 145th Naval Construction Battalion. Nesgoda was buried at and reinterred at Gettysburg National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
COX Nicodemus Nettles was killed in action from a gunshot wound on 30 August 1944 while serving with the 19th Special Naval Construction Battalion. He was buried at New Guinea cemetery and reinterred at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
  CM3c Robert Neumann was killed in action during an enemy air raid on LST-398 at Vella LaVella on 21 August 1943 while serving with the 58th Naval Construction Battalion. He was buried at Guadalcanal Cemetery, Lunga Point. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
S1c Leon McKinley Newsome was killed in action during the invasion of Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945 while serving with the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion. Newsome was buried at the 4th Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Navy Unit Commendation for the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
CM1c Morris Newton was killed in action aboard LST 472 during initial invasion of Mindoro, Philippines on 16 December 1944. While serving with the 113th Naval Construction Battalion, Newton was on duty with damage control party when LST 472 was attacked by enemy aircraft off Mindoro Island. A bomb struck  the ship causing gasoline and flames to set him afire. He died from extreme second and third degree burns. CM1c Newton was buried at sea. Newton is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Philippines. There is also a burial marker at Elmwood Cemetery, Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, and entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Philippines Defense Ribbon.
ENS Thomas Nixon was killed in action at Guam on 21 July 1944 while serving with Underwater Demolition Unit 64. Nixon was buried at Guam and reinterred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Texarkana, Arkansas. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
CM1c Harry Albert Noll was killed in action at Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945 while serving with the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion.  Noll was buried at the 4th Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima, and reinterred at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Reiffton, Pennsylvania. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Navy Unit Commendation for the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
