WWII Killed in Action List "V"

  S1c Emil Van Buren was working on the beach at Guam shifting ammunition when an enemy shell exploded on 21 July 1944. Van Buren was attached to the 2nd Special Naval Construction Battalion on Guam during the invasion when the shell exploded. Van Buren's remains were never located and he was declared missing in action. He is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Hawaii.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
CM3c Clair Van Eps was killed in action at Iwo Jima on 24 March 1945 from a gunshot wound to the chest when attacked by enemy soldiers. He served with the 90th Naval Construction Battalion. Van Eps was buried at the 4th Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima and reinterred at Fulton Township Cemetery, Moorland, Iowa. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Navy Unit Commendation for the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal.
  S1c Armandzor Placid Vanasse was killed in action aboard LST-333 after it was hit by torpedoes on 22 June 1943. Vanesse served with the 70th Naval Construction Battalion in Algeria preparing for the invasion of Sicily. LST-333 was attacked by U-boat U-593 off the coast of Algeria. Vanesse and 25 other crewmen were killed after being hit by 4 torpedoes. Vanasse was buried in American Cemetery, Constantine, Algeria, and reinterred at Saint Brigid's Cemetery in East Hampton, Massachusetts. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
CM1c Thomas Michael Vargoshe was killed in action off the coast of Algeria when LST-333 was torpedoed by U-593 on 22 June 1943. Vargoshe was buried in American Cemetery, Constantine, Algeria, and reinterred at  Saint Michael's Cemetery in Stratford, Connecticut. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
CM2c James Vistain was killed in action during the invasion of Normandy on 10 June 1044 while serving with the 111th Naval Construction Battalion. Vistain is buried at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Department du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, was entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
